From iDEAL to Wero

17 October 2025

Reading time: 5 min

Starting in 2026, iDEAL will begin its transition to Wero - a new European payment solution developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Backed by 16 leading banks, including ING, Rabobank, and ABN AMRO, Wero builds on iDEAL’s trusted foundation and introduces new features for both merchants and consumers.

What is Wero?

Wero enhances iDEAL’s reliability with broader European reach, more advanced features, and a smoother user experience:

  • One European solution – Online, in-store and peer-to-peer payments across borders

  • Smart payment features – One-click payments, bill splitting, payment requests and more

  • Aligned with European priorities – Supported by 16 leading banks, including ING, Rabobank and ABN Amro

  • Purchase protection – Increases consumer trust and conversion with dispute protection

As a strategic shareholder of EPI, ING is closely involved in the development of Wero and supports the initiative from both the recipient (acquirer) and the payer side (issuer).

Steps in the evolution to Wero

The transition from iDEAL to Wero will be gradual and happen in two phases.

Phase 1 – Co-branding: iDEAL I Wero

Starting in January 2026, all references to iDEAL across payment pages, banking apps, and merchant interfaces must be updated to reflect the co-branding: iDEAL | Wero. This includes both visual elements (such as logos) and textual references.

The co-branding reflects the transition to Wero, the new European payment solution developed under the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Wero combines the trusted features of iDEAL with broader European reach, and the co-branding has tested positively with consumers.

To support this transition, awareness campaigns will be launched by iDEAL | Wero and participating banks. In parallel, iDEAL transactions will begin migrating to the Wero infrastructure to ensure continued reliability. ING clients will not be impacted by this technical migration.

Action Required

*All resources & support needed are on this page

As communicated to all iDEAL clients, the first step in the transition is the mandatory implementation of co-branding across all relevant environments. The co-branding transition should be fully completed by 31 March 2026.

This includes updating all your communication channels, documentation user interfaces:

  • All textual references from “iDEAL” to “iDEAL | Wero” – rebranding is allowed from 22 January 2026

  • Logos to the iDEAL | Wero version – rebranding is allowed from 29 January 2026

Co-branding guidelines & logo

Below you can find the brand manual providing guidance needed to support a consistent and professional visual and textual iDEAL | Wero co-branding rollout.

Furthermore, the logo package includes the co-branded logo in two designs for digital usage, available in multiple formats. Detailed guidelines on how to use the logo can be found in the brand manual. Only standard logo formats (rectangular and square) may be used. For non-standard applications, prior approval from ING is required.

If you work with a technical service provider, please share this information with them promptly to allow sufficient time for implementation.

Phase 2 – Full rollout of Wero

Once volumes have shifted and Wero is well-established, the full rollout will begin in Q4 2026.

This phase starts with a contractual update to reflect Wero’s expanded capabilities. Following that, you can implement Wero in your webshop environment or through your technical service provider.

Over time, advanced features such as subscriptions, value-added services, refunds, and peer-to-peer payments will become available. Consumers across Europe will use the same Wero button as Dutch users, ensuring a consistent experience.

ING will reach out beginning of next year to support you in the preparation for phase 2.

FAQ

1. Is Wero mandatory or can I continue using iDEAL?

The transition is planned for all iDEAL users.

2. Do I need to do anything to prepare for Wero?

Yes, between 31 January and 31 March 2026, you need to replace the iDEAL logo in your webshop with the new iDEAL | Wero logo. This is a small change, but it is good for you to plan in your IT roadmaps and/or with your technical service providers.

3. What happens if I do not update the logo?

The change of the logo is mandatory by the iDEAL payment scheme rules. Therefore, not updating the logo by 31 March 2026 would result in breach of your iDEAL contract.

4. How can I reassure customers who think iDEAL is “disappearing”?

This will be as much prevented by the co-branding phase as well as the awareness campaigns. iDEAL is evolving into Wero — with the same ease of use and trust. Consumers will benefit from broader functionality and European reach over time. Consumers will also be informed by their bank and via campaigns in the media.

5. How is Wero priced compared to iDEAL?

There are no pricing changes during the co-branded phase. Towards the end of 2026, the full technical migration and new integration will begin, including a contractual update to unlock all Wero features.

6. What are the benefits of Wero for me?

a. European payments: Wero works across several European countries, including Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. No need for separate systems for international customers.

b. Ease of use: Wero supports multiple payment options in one system, making it easier for your customers to pay - including purchase protection, which boosts customer satisfaction.
