Frankfurt/Mainz, 2 February 2026 – The Green Rocks project is bringing a state-of-the-art, sustainable data center to Mainz. The project is backed by strong partners: Norwegian data center operator Green Mountain and energy utility KMW (Kraftwerke Mainz-Wiesbaden AG). Through their joint venture (Green Mountain KMW Data Center GmbH), they have secured the financing for a data center that will set new benchmarks for energy efficiency and sustainability. The campus comprises three buildings with a total IT capacity of 54 megawatts. The first building is planned for completion by the end of 2026.
The EUR 600 million financing is being provided by ING and Helaba Landesbank Hessen-Thuringia as mandated lead banks. ING contributes its long-standing experience in data center financing, while Helaba leverages its strong regional footprint and infrastructure expertise in structuring the transaction. The financing is arranged as a Green Loan under the use-of-proceeds principle. This means the funds are earmarked exclusively for sustainable projects, such as the construction and operation of the energy-efficient data center. This ensures that the financing meets high environmental and climate protection standards.
“With Green Rocks, we are setting a new standard for sustainable digital infrastructure in Germany. We bring international expertise and combine it with innovative cooling technology and the consistent use of renewable energy. This creates a site in Mainz that is not only efficient, but also redefines the future of data center operations,” says Tobias Junglas, Managing Director, Green Mountain KMW Data Center GmbH.
“Germany needs high-performing digital infrastructure. The Green Rocks project shows how digital transformation and sustainability can go hand in hand. We are pleased to support this initiative,” says Eddy Henning, Member of the Management Board Corporate Banking, ING Germany.
“As a bank with a strong regional footprint, we are pleased to support a project like Green Rocks that secures the digital future of the Rhine-Main region while meeting the highest sustainability standards,” emphasizes Sabine Möller, Global Head of Asset Finance, Helaba.
