José Ugalde joined ING as Director Transaction Services Sales in April 2025. In the interview he talks about his application process, the first few months at ING and about his work at ING Germany Wholesale Banking.
How did you join ING?
My first contact with the bank was of a private nature a few years ago – as a customer with the classic topics such as accounts, financing and investments. The experience was very positive from the beginning. At the end of 2024, I was then approached professionally for a job. After the first interviews, it was already clear that this good feeling also applies to the job. So I joined in April – and was very happy to become part of the TS Sales Team.
Why did you choose ING?
In addition to my positive personal experiences, I have dealt with the company even more intensively in the course of the application process. Especially in Wholesale Banking, it was always clear to me that banking thrives on relationships. Internationality, a strong brand, clear values and a digital orientation – I could immediately imagine to represent those ING values to the outside world. When I experienced the ING culture in the interviews and was in the office in Hamburger Allee for the first time, I knew: this is where I want to work and belong.
How did you experience your first months at ING - do you already feel part of the lions den?
Absolutely. I was welcomed very openly by the team and was able to get involved quickly. Particularly impressive for me was the opportunity to travel to Amsterdam in the first few weeks to participate in the TS Onboarding Days. I was even able to take part in a town hall with our CEO, which really made the start special. I was also a bit lucky, because shortly after my start at ING, the Finanzsymposium took place in Mannheim, where I was able to meet several clients in person and also get to know my colleagues better. A small but no less important highlight: white sneakers with orange laces at the event. The bank really understands how to integrate New Joiner – and yes, I absolutely feel part of the pack.
What distinguishes ING from other banks?
ING embodies flat hierarchies and promotes personal responsibility. But what really makes the difference is the people and the culture. You can feel that the employees are proud to be part of the bank. The 'Orange Code' and the 'Orange Life' are clearly noticeable. There is a shared feeling of moving things forward.
Was there a moment or experience that particularly shaped your career?
A decisive moment at the beginning of my career was the change from finance to the front office. Over time, I have learned: not everything can be planned, a lot is created on the way. Above all, it was the people who made the difference – colleagues who supported and encouraged me. At ING, I was particularly impressed and influenced by a colleague (Ute D.), who has now retired: her commitment to the end and the great recognition from clients were really inspiring. That showed me what really counts – and I want to achieve something similar one day.
What does your daily work look like?
As Director Transaction Services Sales, my everyday work is very diverse – a mixture of client meetings including client visits and travel, internal coordination and analytical work. I accompany transactions, prepare a basis for decision-making and work closely with various teams in ING. At the same time, I am still familiarizing myself with some processes and taking the opportunity to get to know new colleagues better.
If you could look back on your early days, what advice would you give to your younger self?
Don't be afraid to ask questions – especially in the beginning. Openness and curiosity are crucial, also to build relationships. And with all the new things and all the goals you have, don't forget to have fun doing it. Life is too short. Enjoy the moment.
Away from work: where do you recharge your batteries and what do you enjoy?
My source of energy is clearly the time with my family. We live in Frankfurt and spend a lot of time outdoors – whether it's playing football, cycling or simply in the park. My daughter Isabella and my son Leonardo - whom we call Leo like the lion - make sure that it never gets boring. I love music and am happy to travel with the family.
