At ING Wholesale Banking, there are many opportunities to do an internship. But what does an internship at ING actually look like? What tasks do interns take on? And what is special about an internship at ING? Ana, Charlotte and Priyanshu share their experiences.

Who are you? Please introduce yourself briefly.

Charlotte: Hi, I'm Charlotte. I completed my bachelor's degree recently, studying business administration with a regional focus on China.

Ana: Hello, I'm Ana, I'm studying business administration and doing an internship in Wholesale Banking marketing at ING.

Priyanshu: I’m Priyanshu , I’m in my the last semester right now. I'm currently doing an internship in lending at ING and writing my thesis on the weekends.

How did you come to ING?

Charlotte: I already had some internships before, also in the financial sector. But I really wanted to take another look at the banking system and focus more on financial markets.

Priyanshu: At a career event at my university, I met Mr. Zokic, who introduced me to the career opportunities available at ING. It just clicked.

Ana: I used to work for a company that cooperated with ING. So I already knew the bank. And I also became aware of various ING content on social media. When I saw the vacancy, I thought it might be a fit.

What are your daily tasks during the internship?

Ana: The cool thing about marketing is that the tasks are always quite diverse. For example, there is the creation of various content pieces for social media, writing texts, doing translations, designing visuals and also a lot around the topic of events.

Charlotte: My day-to-day tasks include the pricing of bonds and Schuldschein-Loans as well as the preparation of investor pitches.

Priyanshu: In my lending internship, I mainly work in the financial analysis of companies because these companies need capital to run their businesses. So essentially, our division helps these companies run them. We process term loans, revolving credit facilities, overdraft facilities, cash balancing et cetera. My job is to support with the credit ratings.

What did you like best?

Charlotte: That I have the feeling that I am really part of the team and can take responsibility.

Ana: What I really liked is that you are not treated differently as an intern. You are immediately seen as a full-fledged team member and the work, no matter how small or large, is fully appreciated.

Priyanshu: The most important thing that I love about my internship is the culture at ING. So talking to people is very easy. You can ask them out for a coffee, discuss your career aspirations and learn more about their roles. That’s just super exciting for me.

What do you take away from your internship at ING?

Ana: In any case, I take very, very many memories with me. The events where you can exchange ideas and network with other colleagues were special. And of course the ski trip, where I was lucky enough to be there.

Priyanshu: For me, since I am an expat here, it's really new for me to work in the German banking industry. This experience helps me to understand how a German bank operates, how people operate, and what the culture is like around German corporates.

Charlotte: A lot of knowledge about debt capital markets! I also got the feeling that I would like to continue working in this field.

What is special about an internship at ING?

Priyanshu: Above all, the large network and the people at ING.

Ana: When you think about an internship, you think of the stereotype: copying, printing, making coffee. This is absolutely not the case with ING. You are be directly involved in many processes and projects. But you are not left alone and always have someone by your side to support you.

What was the biggest challenge during your internship?

Priyanshu: I wouldn't necessarily call it a challenge, but understanding all the processes from the beginning is not always easy. There’s definitely an adjustment period. But within a few weeks, you quickly understand the processes because the team is super supportive.

Charlotte: Familiarizing yourself with IT and many new tools and processes in the first few days was a bit stressful. But now it's a lot of fun.

What advice would you give to future interns?

Ana: Make the most of it, learn as much as you can and just enjoy it. Time passes so quickly that you don't even notice it when it's over.

Priyanshu: Enjoy your time at ING. Be open to challenges and willing to take responsibility. Dare to ask questions – because that's how you learn.

What are your plans for the future?

Charlotte: I'll probably do my master's degree in the fall and otherwise I can definitely imagine continuing to work in finance.

Ana: I am now planning to finish my studies soon and would like to continue to concentrate on marketing. Perhaps also in the financial sector.
