The energy sector consists of conventional and renewable power generation, transport, and storage and covers activities across the oil and gas value chain. All traditional sources of energy (electrons and molecules) are consolidated within the sector.

Our activities are comprised of six sub-sectors:

  • Renewables and Power
  • Oil and Gas Upstream
  • Oil and Gas Mid- & Downstream
  • Utilities
  • Energy Project Advisory
  • New Energy Technologies

With the energy transition in mind, combining both sources of energy in one sector allows us to observe and anticipate the partial replacement of hydrocarbons by electricity from renewable sources in several parts of the global energy system and work together with our clients to ensure their businesses are resilient and sustainable.

The sector is characterised by the diversity of our global client base as evidenced by their geographical presence that ranges from global to local, their position in the value chain from fully integrated across the spectrum to dedication to a specific niche, and the ownership that varies from state-owned to family-owned.

We regularly receive questions from stakeholders about our position on specific topics. Please read more about our stance on energy and oil & gas on our Opens in a new tabDedicated Climate Approach page.

Energy transition in practice

Scaling new energy infrastructure requires both capital and sector understanding. Electra is a fast‑growing European operator of electric vehicle charging stations, expanding its network across Western Europe.

In this video, Electra shares how it worked with ING to raise €433 million in financing, supported by hands-on experience in the sector and strong global network.
